2006 Sweet Malbec

See our complete wine selection

2006 Sweet MalbecVery unique! A refreshing, slightly sweet summer wine that we like as an aperitif or with lighter desserts. Wine writer, Chris Sawyer, recently suggested that his perfect match would be cheesecake with a raspberry coulis.

Never heard of a Sweet Malbec? Neither had we.

We love the taste of the juice from the freshly crushed Malbec grapes and thought we could make a delicious wine which would retain that fresh-squeezed juice flavor. So we selected fruit from the knoll in our Rennie Vineyard where the grapes hung in large bunches with plump berries. We then stopped the fermentation at 10% alcohol (our regular Malbec is 13%) while leaving 5.7% residual sugar, nowhere near the 15% to 25% sugar that late harvest desert wines typically have. So this first Sweet Malbec could be termed an experiment that turned out much better than could've been expected.

Due to individual state regulations we can only ship to the following 28 states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming. We can also ship internationally, however it's pretty expensive.

Winemaker's notes

Fermented in a special tank with a cooling jacket, this wine took 25 days to reach the sugar level we wanted. The slow fermentation gave a vibrant fruit quality to this wine. Bottled soon after the wine was settled, with no oak contact, this is best consumed young, by the end of 2008.

Pairing with food

Lighter fruit desserts, such as

strawberry shortcake,

or biscotti and fresh fruit.

Matches with cheese

Probably a better match with cheesecake, you could pair with sweeter blue cheese; Cabrales or Gorgonzola dolce.
