During our final day of the 2008 harvest, Oct. 29th, Deborah inspects Petit Verdot grapes before they are delivered to our winery. Petit Verdot is such a late ripening grape, we often pick it on or near Halloween. Because of the risk that it may not ripen before the rains, there are few farmers willing to plant much of it. As such, for the last several years it has been the most expensive grape for wineries to purchase from growers (In Napa County $5,070 versus $4,302 avg. per ton for Cabernet Sauvignon last year, for example [CA Grape Price Details - see pg 22; Napa is district #4]
