May - Merry Month of Malbec
Three views of our vineyard this week as we remove weeds and cover crop for the growing season. Left- a row with cover crop left intact, to attract beneficial insects. The middle photo shows our Randle Hill Vineyard after
hand removal of the weeds directly below the vines (the hard part) but
before mowing with the tractor. Right- our Rennie Vineyard after hand hoeing, weed wacking and cultivating with the tractor. Weed removal is the most labor intensive part of organic viticulture. Many vineyards now claim they use "organic practices" in the vineyard- Here at Yorkville Cellars, the practice is over, and our team is ready for our 20th season and harvest!
Malbec - Last call
Over the last five years we've typically run out of Malbec in pretty short order and then had to disappoint our customers for quite a few months. Despite doubling our production of cases, this is about to happen again. Because in the last two weeks our 2004 Malbec has won a GOLD & BEST OF CLASS at the New World Int'l Wine Competition and also a GOLD medal at the Pacific Rim International and word will spread quickly. So we expect the routine is about to play out again. As a result we'd like to give you, our best customers, a last chance on this wonderful Malbec- which remains one of the only Malbec's produced in California.
