Finally... We can celebrate our

bud break; and we don't mean Budweiser

Sauvignon Blanc buds break out in our Randle Hill Vineyard behind

our tasting room.

Generally bud break is in mid-March. This year with over 80 inches of rain, and worse yet, continuous rain until early April, it didn't happen until around April 19th. Bud break is when the first shoots and green leaves appear on the vines starting the growing season. Harvest is typically about 175 days later; meaning dangerously close to post- Indian Summer potential rains in late October. We can't worry about that now because the young shoots are vulnerable to frost, so we must keep an eagle-eye on night and early morning temperatures. Our frost proetection sprinklers need to be on if the temperture drops to 34 degrees, or there will be no crop. Among the pleasures of farming...

Monthly Special: Richard

Producing our Richard the Lion-Heart is one of the most enjoyable things we do each year. We work as a team during blending trials to take the best barrels of each of our five red varietals: Merlot, Cabernet

Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and

Cabernet Sauvignon attempting to create the most hedonistically satisfying wine that we can. Usually this takes dozens and dozens of trial blends over numerous days. We try to explain to people: it's hard work- really!

This month's special is for two different vintages of Richard:
